Episode 059 - Fargo and The Apartment

Episode 059 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie.

This week Charlie has selected ‘The Apartment’ from 1960, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley Maclaine and Fred MacMurray.

Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) begins using Baxter's apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career.

Charlie’s second pick is from 1996 and is the Coen Brothers’ classic ‘Fargo’.

"Fargo" is a reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi), (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell), paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. The scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper.

There is also some welcome audio feedback from our good friend Tom from the Anywhere But Here podcast giving us his thoughts on Pan’s Labyrinth.

Episode 058 - A Taste of Honey and Darling

Episode 058 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie.

This week, Scott takes Charlie on a journey to the swinging sixties with two highly acclaimed British movies.

Our first review is A Taste of Honey from 1961. Directed by Tony Richardson, it stars Rita Tushingham, Dora Bryan and Murray Melvin.

‘In this domestic drama, British teen Jo (Rita Tushingham) struggles to find love in her bleak day-to-day life, which is dominated by her alcoholic mother, Helen (Dora Bryan). When Jo has a brief fling with a black sailor and Helen takes up with a new lover, their already tense relationship is further strained. Jo faces more complications as she discovers she is pregnant, but finds support when she moves in with an odd but thoughtful gay student named Geoffrey (Murray Melvin).’

Our second movie is Darling from 1965. It stars Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey and features an Academy Award winning performance by Julie Christie. Directed by John Schlesinger.

‘Beautiful but easily bored Diana Scott (Julie Christie) becomes a popular model and actress in London in the 1960s while toying with the affections of two older men, married television newsman Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde) and public relations mastermind Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey). Although Diana is the toast of swinging London, the dark side of fame and fortune begins to take its toll, but it proves harder to escape the mod scene than she expects.’

Episode 054 - High Society and The Beguiled

It’s episode 054 of the Stinking Pause podcast. Scott’s choice of movies this week.

First up, Scott and Charlie look at the birthday movie which celebrates the centenary of Frank Sinatra’s birth….High Society from 1956. A musical also featuring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Louis Armstrong along with songs from the legendary Cole Porter.

Our second movie is a Clint Eastwood movie directed by Don Siegel from 1971…The Beguiled. Not quite a western, more Southern Gothic (whatever that may be ?).

We are also pleased to include audio feedback from Jim, one half of The Film Thugs and his account of his meeting with the legend that is James Ellroy.

There is also a welcome return to Mark from The Good The Bad and the Odd podcast and his thoughts on both of the movies that we are reviewing in this episode.

Let’s just say that we found this one a tough watch.

Please feel free to pass on your views and comments on the movie via email or mp3 to thestinkingpause@gmail.com   We would love to hear any thoughts from our listeners telling us that we have underestimated this French masterpiece.
