Episode 082 - Eraserhead (1977)

Episode 082 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie.

Charlie’s choice for this episode is the directorial debut from David Lynch - Eraserhead from 1977 starring Jack Nance.

Henry (John Nance) resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him. Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple's baby turns out to be a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Other characters, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, inhabit the building and add to Henry's troubles.

We also usher in the first edition of ‘Fourplay’, where in this episode, with the help of our dear listeners, select four of the most disturbing things ever seen on film.

Episode 079 - Forrest Gump (1994)

Episode 079 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie

Charlie's choice of movie this week so it's back to 1994 to take look at Forrest Gump.

This Academy Award winner for Best Picture stars Tom Hanks as the good hearted, but painfully slow Forrest Gump, a man who manages to somehow be involved with almost every major event in history during the last half of the 20th Century. Spanning the course of his life, the story follows him as he grows from a weak child to a war hero to a shrimp boat captain, all the while pining for the love of his childhood friend Jenny, played by Robin Wright.

Episode 077 - Five Easy Pieces (1970)

Episode 077 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie

It's back to 1970 and early Jack Nicholson as Scott and Charlie review Bob Rafelson's 'Five Easy Pieces'.

Bobby Dupea seems to be a regular blue collar kind of guy. He works on oil rigs and lives with his girlfriend Rayette who works as waitress in a diner. He spends a lot of his time drinking and carousing. After having little or no contact with his family for three years, he decides to pay a visit to his family home after sister Partita tells him their father is quite ill having had a stroke. Surprisingly, Bobby's family is quite well off and all seem to be accomplished musicians. Bobby himself is a classical pianist. He still finds them pompous and annoying, something that comes to the fore again during his visit.

Episode 076 - Zulu (1964)

Episode 076 of the Stinking Pause podcast with Scott and Charlie (and Mark)

In this episode we are joined by our very dear friend Mark from The Good The Bad and The Odd podcast (amongst others).

Mark celebrated his birthday recently and traditionally he will celebrate by watching his favourite movie, Zulu starring Stanley Baker and Michael Caine. So we thought we would honour the occasion with him and review the movie and just find out what makes it so special for him.

Eagle eared listeners will recall that we reviewed the movie way back in the early days of the show but felt that it was time to spend a little more time with it in the company of a fantastic guest.

Episode 075 - Midnight Run (1988)

Episode 075 of The Stinking Pause classic movie review podcast. This week Scott and Charlie take a look at Martin Brest’s 'Midnight Run' starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin

Director Martin Brest, of Going in Style and Beverly Hills Cop fame, was in charge of Midnight Run. Robert De Niro stars as Jack Walsh, a hard-bitten bounty hunter offered $100,000 to bring in embezzler Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin). Handcuffed to the wimpy Mardukas, Walsh assumes that the extradition trip from New York to Los Angeles will be an uneventful one. But the prisoner hasn't told Walsh the whole story: the embezzler owes $15 million to a mobster (Dennis Farina), and he's been targeted for assassination. It's a toss-up as to what is the most entertaining aspect of Midnight Run: the slam-bang action and chase sequences or the verbal byplay between DeNiro and Grodin.

Episode 072 - The Offence (1973)

Episode 072 - The Offence (1973)

One of the darkest movies we have reviewed. The Offence, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Sean Connery, Ian Bannen, Trevor Howard and Vivien Merchant.

In Sidney Lumet's harrowing portrayal of police brutality, Detective Sergeant Johnson has been with the British Police Force for 20 years. In that time, the countless murders, rapes and other serious crimes he has had to investigate has left a terrible mark on him. His anger and aggression that had been suppressed for years finally surfaces when interviewing a suspect, Baxter, whom Johnson is convinced is the man that has been carrying out a series of brutal attacks on young girls. Throughout the interview Johnson brutally beats Baxter and during this ordeal we slowly discover dark deeply buried secrets.

Episode 070 - Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

Episode 070 – Sweet Smell of Success

It’s back…after nearly five months of podcasting silence, Scott and Charlie return (whether you wanted them to or not). We almost didn’t make it as, true to form, Skype was being a complete git when we recorded this last week.

So…initial chat about La La Land and our recent screening of Clockwork Orange with Rochester Kino before getting into our review of Sweet Smell of Success starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis.

Be warned…we have already recorded the next episode, so see you all very soon
